I Thought Christianity was built on Compassion - Apparently Not

I began reading bible stories when I was three years old. My older cousins had received a story a month as part of a Roman Catholic subscription service for children. The compiled stories were given to me and I would read the stories which came from both the old and new testaments.

I found the stories fascinating, a fascination which continues to this day in my divinity studies. Even at a young age I understood the message of the story, not the "supposed" historical reporting of the story. The bible, written by man, is a collection of metaphorical stories that are object lessons. True biblical scholars understand that point. Whether you believe it's the channeled wisdom of a divine god is a matter of faith. The metaphorical object lessons of the writings however, are not in contention.

If you've spent any time reading the old and new testament you can see a clear distinction in the nature of god. The old testament god is more demanding, has more directive rules, is vengeful and judgemental. The new testament god is loving, accepting, honoring, respectful.

Essentially god goes thorugh an evolution in the bible. Jesus comes along and preaches about a loving god. If you love god you will be saved in the after life - not this life - later in the afterlife. It's more of a layaway plan.

The distinction is big. God is not vengeful. God is not retributive. God is not demanding. As we read in 1 John 3:18 god wants us not to love in word, but in deed and truth. In the current world of evangelical Christianity in the U.S. today they have resurrected not the Jesus of the new testament, but the god who orders Abraham to sacrifice his son, or destroys other people because they are not chosen.

If we are created in the image of this god, and Jesus told us to love the least of us, then god can not hate gays, feminists, gay marriage, or the people of Haiti. Christian love, if understood and practiced, is about unconditionality in thought and deed, as well as word.

The false prophets of Christianity such as the late Jerry Falwell, or Pat Robertson, Rick Warren, Oral Roberts, James Dobson, John Hagee, and Rod Parsley, to name a few notable mouthpieces, do not profess Christian virtues. They preach a doctrine of exclusion, separation, damnation, punishment and fear.

Let's begin offering them the same behavior. Let's minimize these "purported" preachers. Let's ignore them. Let them know they do not speak the intended or actual work of god. Identify them as the bigoted, hate- and fear-mongering proponents they truly are.

In this millennium of partnership, in this astrological period with Jupiter in Aquarius, in this year of collaboration and divine co-creation, let us collectively create a doctrine of truth. Live in unconditional love in thought, deed and word. Identify the false prophets for what they are - snake oil salesmen selling a doctrine of hate and exclusion. Do not acknowledge them as Christians. Do not acknowledge them as spiritual leaders. Do not let them poison the minds of people without challenge.

If we want to reach a place of peace in this world, each of us must find a place of peace within ourselves. Be Love. Be Unconditional Love. Believe in yourself. Love yourself. Love others and with humility let them be who they are. But don't ignore the liars - let the world know they are liars, it helps reduce the power of the lies.
