Why is President Obama the Enemy and President Bush Could do no Wrong?
In the first eight months of President Obama's presidency Fox News, Fox's pundits, Republicans and Conservatives have demonized almost everything the President does.
In the past 8 years if a person even suggested a criticism of President Bush we all paraded with a cacophony of how unpatriotic it was to criticize a President in a time of war. Yet, there is not a day that goes by without some ludicrous condemnation of what President Obama does.
President Obama is variously labeled as a Marxist (a label bandied by corporations in the 20s and 30s because they were afraid of giving power to the workers); Socialist (which is actually a mis-labeled term because it was variously used by Communists and Nazis - both right wing totalitarian regimes); Fascist (which is more correctly given to the past administration because Fascism embraces corporations and runs a country to the benefit of corporations); and Communist (although there is nothing that even comes close).
This may be an outcome of the movement that spawned the Family (as eloquently detailed in Jeff Sharlet's book, "The Family") and the fundamentalists. There is an authoritarian mindset that exists in segments of the population. That mindset is fed in the U.S. by any "either or", "with us or against us" attitude. The Family forms an interconnecting network of power brokers who believe they were chosen by god to lead and rule, and the fundamentalists believe in the word of translated books which they connect in very diverse ways to say that god has proclaimed certain things as absolute.
While I don't want to rain on any one's parade they might be interested to know that the original Aramaic manuscripts do not exist, they were gone even before the Council of Nicaea. The current New Testament bible is a translation from multiple Greek translations that were translated and translated and even mis-translated to make certain points that are not in the original Greek translations - keeping in mind that the Greek manuscripts are translations of originals that do not exist. So citing the bible as the absolute word of god is like saying I have a full head of hair even though I'm bald.
So we have two non-factual positions that merge together. Since President Bush was a born again Christian, those that claimed their fundamental Christianity (a term I use to indicate bible thumpers who are intolerant and as unlike the mythical Jesus as I am to them), embraced Bush as one of them, meantime the Family embraced Bush as one of their power brokers chosen by god, and an environment of damning all dissent was born. Bush was chosen and a true believer therefore any criticism was blasphemous in the eyes of the god and the bible blinded.
President Obama is a black American, born from a marriage of black Kenyan father and a white American mother. This feeds the most virulent fears of some Americans the black man taking their white women. In addition, he is smart, articulate, handsome and has a beautiful well-balanced family, with a spouse who, like the President, came from modest means and through hard work and education received an Ivy League education and maintains herself with grace and poise.
The authoritarian mindset needs an enemy, but they are not patriotic Americans. They have become rapid, narrow, bigoted and dangerous to the proper exercise of our dialogue in this nation. If you listen to the Fox News network then you are receiving unbalanced and biased reporting. There is no attempt to present a story. O'Reilly, Hannity, Beck, Malkin, Limbaugh (not Fox but damning) twist facts into unrecognizable stories. Fox needs to be required to drop the term News from their reporting, and CNN needs to be encouraged to not just regurgitate Fox stories.
